Subject: Smith and Colliar in Cortland County

Looking for information on a Norris Colliar who was orphaned and taken in by Horace Smith of Cortland County.

The following from "Biographical Review of residents of Broome Co., NY"

"The birthplace of Norris Colliar was in New York State, on the banks of the Hudson River, where he first saw the light in 1821. He was one of a family of six small children who, being early left without parents, were carried to the County House. From that place Norris was taken by Horace Smith, of Cortland County, who brought him up, and proved to be a kind and helpful benefactor.

In my research, I find a Horace Smith that resided in Willet, he is listed on the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 census.

Any help on the above information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all of your thoughtful help. Yes, I had a typographical error and the correct date I'm looking for is 1868. I really appreciate your diligent work. I would love it if it could be posted to Cortland County.

Your Hall info is very interesting. My Edith was my father's grandmother. I only know that her mother was Pauline Hall. Unfortunately, her death certificate lists her father as "Unknown Schaaf".

Anyway, maybe some day I will find we are cousins :-)

Thanks for your help.

Subject: [NYCORTLA] Cortland Rural Cemetery

Many of my family are buried at Cortland Rural Cemetery, was in fact just out east last summer. Back-a time ago I guess it would be Cortland, Cortland Co., NY. But the expanding and growth of the area being so much since the cemetery began, technically speaking I guess it is in what is Cortlandville, once a quite small place, but not now true.

Most people I know who also know the area still refer to it as being in the city of Cortland. So what to do in case like that? Probably most people would recognize Cortland (city), but those not familiar who wish to find and or contact the sexton, may have problem looking in Cortland proper.

Many years ago, cemetery at edge of city of Cortland, used to have a little drive between several little towns in area, no longer true as many abut one another the same as in other places.

I guess the above is surely no answer as to what you should do. But Cortlandville is indeed where the cemetery lies within now.

Keep up the fantastic work Vicki and all of your helpers also !

Subject: MILLER Families from Western NY; including Cortland Co, NY

Hi, Vicki,

I am looking for the parents of Marcus D. MILLER, b.

1809-1810. His parents moved from eastern NY to western NY in the early

1800's. His obituary, written by son, Kelly Marcus MILLER, tells us that

Marcus lived in Onondaga Co., NY. Since only heads of household names show

up in the Censuses for this time period, I am making an exhaustive study of

the various MILLERS from this area. This includes parts of Cayuga, Oswego

and CORTLAND CO, NY, that were taken from Onondaga. Eventually, I will be

sending a CD, which now contains over 1500 local MILLERS, to the Onondaga

Website. I've used Sierra's Generations 7.0 program and included

documentation from Family histories, The actual Census reports, Legal

documents, Cemetery Records, etc. If you are looking for a MILLER ancestor

from this area, please contact me, so I can make sure your MILLER is

included.

I'm anxious to help others with this tough search. I hope to

eventually, find the village or town that Marcus lived in until 1835. There

is a family of MILLERS who lived in Cortland Co, NY, (Harford, Truxton area)

who have descendants with the same name; Marcus MILLER. This is the Erastus

MILLER; Daniel MILLER line. Are they related to my early Marcus? I decided,

after almost 5 years of searching, to study every MILLER family in the area

and Kathy Crowell suggested that I share it. Hopefully, this will help sort

out the confusing relationships between the NJ, MA, CT and Canadian MILLERS.

Does anyone have info on this family? Would anyone care to do a Cortland Co. lookup for me? I would love to know if John Turner Butman has an obituary and if it mentions his parents' names. Since he was b in Cortland Co., his parents had to be living there in 1825. Who were they? I think that he may have been from E. Freetown. Please, if you are from Cortland Co., NY, help me!

Surname: Oeftering, Biscoff, Keisling

NAME: Alaine Keisling

EMAIL: alkeis@panetwork.com

QRYTEXT: According to her 1972 obituary, my great great aunt, Nellie Oeftering Oliver was born in Marathon, NY on 24 July 1882. Her parents were August Oeftering and ?.

By 1888, Nellie & August were in Scranton, PA, where the widowed August married my widowed great great grandmother, Salomea (Selma) Biscoff Keisling on 3 Sept. According their marriage application, August's first unnamed wife died on 16 Nov 1884. I have not been able to find record of her death in PA, but do not know whether she died in Scranton, Marathon, or somewhere in between.

When I checked out the page on ordering Cortland Co birth & death information, I was happy to see that they started keeping records in 1882, but the site said that you should apply to the proper town clerk & there is both a town of Marathon & a village. Is there some way to tell to which I should apply?

In all of the papers I've found for Nellie, she lists Selma as her mother, which makes sense when she probably had no memory of her birth mother, but I would be interested in finding out the woman's name and, if possible, where she & Gus came from in Germany, etc. Also if they left any relatives that I don't know of back in Cortland Co when they moved to PA.

Thanks for any help, suggestions, etc...,

Alaine.

In my Bowers Family I have a George Bowers who was born November 8, 1795

in Homer, New York, Cortland County. I found an article on George and it

said

his fathers name was Samuel Bowers. I believe the family moved to

Pennsylvania. Then my George Bowers was in Licking County, Ohio and he

married a Catherine Gantz. Then they moved to Henry County, Ohio where

they

settled and raised their family. If anyone has a George Bowers who is a

son of

Samuel Bowers with the same birthdate, I would like to hear from you.

Had 8 children: Cynthia (Mrs. John Potter; John; Laura (Mrs. Phylander Potter; Lucinda; Eveline (Mrs. Howard Henry); Julia (Mrs. Hiram Henry--our line--buried by her parents); Charles; and Chauncey.

Need names of his parents, they may have stayed in Bennington, and wonder how he was related to the other DAVISES in Cortland Co. Anna's parents were Phillip and Anna BROWN PUTNAM. Amos and Anna had a son Eugene in Truxton in 1826 and then moved to Oakland Co., MI. Any help with these families will be very much appreciated and I will gladly share info.

Subject: Samsons in Cortland

Cortland is the home of most of the Samson Clan. Abraham married into the Pilgrims and Simeon was a privateer of some note in the Rev. War. His son, George Washington Samson came to the Cortland area, and was a colorful inkeeper, including "Wisdom's Gate", which I understand still stands in Homer.

One branch of our tree were the Ellsworths, who sent four sons off to the Civil War. I have had the copies of applications for pensions around for some years, and at the moment am plodding thru the handwritten entries and getting them transcribed. Since the applications contain a lot of info on the immediate family, neighbors who attest, notary signatures and lawyers, etc. they should be of some interest.

I'm researching a family - Pitts, Rulandus (Sr. and Jr.) Rulandus (the son) served in the Civil War in NY 76th Infantry, most of whom (in the 76th) were From Cortland County and a few From Otsego. His military records only said he was From "Mohawk Valley, NY"....sooooo, in your CONSIDERED Opinion, what neighborhoods (counties, towns) should I REALLY be looking through??

OK. Rulandus Pitts Sr was married to Julia Olliver. Rulandus Pitts Jr. married Nellie Shay in 1879. He was Dutch; she was Irish. He seems to have been married previously and had a daughter, who by 1908 when Sr. died, she was "Mrs. Belle Hill of Rochester, NY". I would be happy to find anyone in the Pitts, Shay, Olliver or Hill clans about now. Thanks for any thoughts you may have. (Rulandus Jr and Nellie Shay married in 1879 and moved west.
